Make sure your young animal is given the best start in life
Getting a new puppy, kitten or young rabbit is extremely exciting, especially if it’s your first pet. It’s important that you have done lots of research about your chosen breed, and that you give the new addition to your family the best possible start in life.
At Bell Brown and Bentley we recommend that you bring your new pet to see one of our vets once a month until they’re six months old. This is so that their growth and development can be monitored to ensure they grow into a happy and healthy animal.
You and your furry friend will see a veterinary nurse when you bring your pet for a check-up. Our nurses are full of great information and tips that will help you raise your pet. They can discuss anything from weight and dietary requirements to cleaning your pet’s teeth, so don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
Once your pet is six months old you will only need to bring them for a general check-up once a year. If you have any concerns about their health in between visits however, book an appointment to see one of our vets as soon as possible.
Vaccinations are injections that are given to puppies, kittens and baby rabbits to prevent them from getting nasty diseases and infections. Your pet should be vaccinated before it is allowed outside.
At Bell Brown and Bentley we administer vaccinations between 2 and 4 weeks apart. The initial injections can be given when your pet is 8 weeks old.
Dogs are usually protected against:
- Kennel cough
- Canine herpes virus
Cats are usually protected against:
- Feline leukaemia virus
- Cat flu viruses
- Infectious enteritis
Rabbits are usually protected against:
- Viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD)
In some cases we may advise you to bring your pet for booster vaccinations at a later date. This is to simply boost their immunity against the conditions they’ve already been protected against. We will inform you of whether this applies to your pet when you visit us.
